Guide to Heriz Rugs & Carpets by Barry O'Connell, Spongobongo.com: "In the 18th - 20th centuries there have been a constant series of upheavels between Russia and her Moslem neighbors to the south. Every time Russia and Turkey fought Moslems moved south and Armenians moved north. Many of the weavers from the Heriz area are a result of imagration from what is now Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The great German rug expert Heinrich Jacoby described a diference in size pre-1880 and post-1880. In the pre-1880 period Jacoby suggests that the most common size was 6 feet 6 inches by 13 feet. This length equals twice width seems typical in that period before the massive commercial export period. Long and narrow was in keeping with the needs of the Persian buyer. After 1880 production shifted to European sizes. Starting with 6 meter rugs (6 feet 7 inches by 9 foot 10 inches) they were made in sizes typically up to 16 foot 6 inch by 26 feet. Jacoby, Heinrich. RADIO AUSTRALIA:
3 Days and a Soccer Game
This is hilarious! 8 Commandos are found in Iranian Territory and what do the "Hard Line" Revolutionary Guard do?
Torture maybe? Chop off hands? Flog the Brits? No they let them watch England's Euro 2004 soccer game. Why is every thing Iran does seen as evil by the western press? If 8 Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commandos were found in small boats in the Mississippi Delta you can be sure they would get far worse than 3 days and a soccer game. JBOC
"Our correspondent says it's been revealed that soon after their capture the Revolutionary Guards allowed the eight to watch England's Euro 2004 soccer game against Croatia to boost morale."

Rug Structure: What is a warp?: "Rug Structure: What is a warp?
Warps are the strands that run from top to bottom on the loom.
Here we can see the progression of how a rug is woven. These pictures are of a small pile bag woven by American weaver Mark Traxler. First Mark strings the loom with cotton strands. Then he weaves the rug on the foundation of those strands. They are the warp. As we can see below when the rug is removed from the loom the warps become the fringe. "

A major exhibition on Iranian carpets opened at the Mitsubishi Club in the Japanese capital of Tokyo on Tuesday.
The two-day exposition marks the production of a joint Irano-Japanese movie called `The Wind Carpet' directed by Kamal Tabrizi. In the inaugural ceremony, the producer of the film, Yomiko Masuda praised the beauty of Iranian carpets and said that `The Wind Carpet' mainly aims to manifest the charms of the craft to the Japanese people. The celebrated Japanese actor, Takaaki Enoki, who appears in the role of the father of a ten-year-old girl traveling to Isfahan to pick up a Persian carpet in `The Wind Carpet`, said that the movie provided an opportunity for cultural exchange between the two states.
